As long as there have been religious texts, there have been theologians studying and writing about them. St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas are two of the most famous early theologians whose writings are still studied today. Theological study in America had its start in the early 18th century when individual pastors would take one or two students under their tutelage. In 1812, the Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church at Princeton in New Jersey was founded. This was the first institution to focus on the education of theology in a systematic way. Today, there are hundreds of seminary and university religious programs that focus on the study of God.
